Young Achiever's Spotlight

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- More than a dozen kids from across Cenla were chosen to participate in a special camp to help build skills for a successful future. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton speaks to three participants of Camp RYLA in this edition of Young Achiever's Spotlight.

Meet Lisa, Lindsay, and Madeline...three Alexandria Senior High School juniors who were chosen to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp held this summer in Ruston.

"You can develop your skills that you already have and pretty much become a better leader and learn how to work with other people and just get out of your comfort zone," says participant Madeline Beauregard.

The program better known as Camp RYLA...hosts about 60 specially selected students from across the state.

"This camp helps you come out of your comfort zone and it just gives you so many helpful tips in life," says participant Lindsay Beauregard.

Students participate in games and activities to build leadership values and to help them think outside the box.

"There was one point where we were trying to flip a tarp over it with the horse touching it without the horse touching the ground," says participant Lisa Carter.

They're learning skills that will help set them up for successful futures.

"The most important thing that I learned was to be a leader you also have to listen to other people and take in their ideas," adds Lindsay.

"Not only the things we need, the skills we need, but they also taught us how to act on those and how to have the courage to do what we want and not be afraid because what if you do succeed?" adds Lisa.

"When an opportunity is presented to us how to react to that opportunity and to take that opportunity," adds Madeline.

And, the Rotary Club hopes that these students will bring those success stories back to Louisiana one day.

"They really want us to help our own community as well. Like whenever we go off and succeed in all these different ways they want us to eventually come back and help Louisiana," adds Lisa.

They're three young achievers that are helping to lead Cenla's youth...

"It made me feel like I accomplished something huge. It makes me feel like any job I go to I'll be able to work with anyone," says Lindsay.

And Cenla's future.

The Rotary Club of Alexandria helps fund the Cenla's students participation and also provides transportation to and from the camp.
