CLTCC Receives Grant

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) A new program is on the way for manufacturing students at Central Louisiana Technical Community College.

"The Center of Excellence is a new concept it allows us to expand and improve some existing programs related to manufacturing. It will serve as a center for manufacturing excellence," said Dr. Rodney Ellis.

CLTCC is one of two community colleges in the state to receive a multi million dollar grant from the Obama Administration to focus on skills training.

Welding teachers and students we spoke with say this grant and program have come at a crucial time for the students enrolled at the school.

"It is going to be a tremendous help to our program. Welding is really big right now, it will help us get new machines and upgrade the facility. Fabrication shops and manufacturers in this area, they are screaming for help," said Mike Stuchlik.

"I am definitely really excited because it is going to help us get better learning. The teachers are great here and it is going to help them out too," said Kevin Forest.

With CLTCC set to receive the 2.7 million dollar grant in October, school administrators say they are confident in the services the new manufacturing program will offer to the CenLa business community.

"As a community college one of our things we thrive on is making sure we meet the needs of the community especially as it relates to work force. We are finding a way to increase the resources so that way we can expand our offerings to meet the needs of employers," said Dr. Rodney Ellis.
