Radio Maria Fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- The delicious smell of fried fish was in the air today- right outside the KALB studios and it was all because of an important fundraiser put on by our next door neighbors at Radio Maria. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has the details on the semi-annual Maria-thon.

The fish were frying in Downtown Alexandria on Thursday, for the semi-annual Radio Maria fundraiser.

"We ask people to contribute not to pay for the product but to help spread the word to bring the good news to more people and to support this mission of the word of God," says Father Robert Young, National Program Director.

The station holds the fundraiser each year in the spring and fall, so that it can continue to provide Catholic radio programming to listeners throughout the world.

"We do this to raise money for Radio Maria since we're a non-profit we take no money for advertisements or from any other source. Just our contributors and listeners," says volunteer John Tumminello.

Radio Maria also plays another vital role in the community- and it's one that begins next door at the KALB studios.

"Our co-working with KALB to provide emergency broadcast news to people when it's needed so KALB can plug in right away into our radio system to bring the word to people if there is an emergency and how to respond to it," says Tumminello.

Throughout this week's fundraiser, volunteers having been cooking up lunch plates of jambalaya and catfish to sell and they've also been taking monetary pledges. It's a fundraiser that's all in the name of continuing to spread their message of faith...to their faithful listeners.

"This is our way to thank people. To celebrate the gift we have with our faith and to share it with others," adds Tumminello.

Radio Maria says they hope to have raised $100,000 at this year's fall fundraiser, once the final numbers are in.

Tomorrow, expect a hot day with a big dome of high pressure moving right overhead. High temperatures will most likely climb into the mid-90s with mostly sunny skies and light southwest winds. With sinking air over the region, atmospheric pollutants and allergies will get banked up along the surface with no where to go. For this reason, pollen counts will be increasing tomorrow and air quality will most likely go down, so keep that in mind if you have breathing problems or allergies.Changes wi...More >>
