Learning Life Skills

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- There's a group of kids here in Cenla who spent the day hard at work, learning life skills that will help them become independent adults. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton introduces us to a special group of students from Buckeye High School.

The Main Dish was open for business today bright and early, but it wasn't to prepare the regular lunch menu.

"They're rolling silverware. They're going to be helping clean menus and fill up salt and pepper shakers and sugar caddy's and wiping down tables. You know, normal restaurant business," says The Main Dish owner Phil Brocato.

This group of kids is a part of the Buckeye High School community based training class- all of the students have some type of mental or physical disability.

"This helps them to learn skills whether they go out to a job or whether they use it in their everyday life," says special education teacher Renee Wiggins.

The mission of the class is to learn vocational skills that can't be taught in a classroom.

"We've been doing social skills training with the whole group. Learning how to hold conversations, emotion management, self-control kind of things," adds Brocato.

And, to introduce them to possible career paths.

"This could be something that we want to do when we get out of school like get in the restaurant business or whatever," says 10th grade student Cody Schellenger.

The kids are being dished up a heaping helping of real life experience- and having fun in the process.

"Anything that makes them feel like they're doing something and they're a part of something and involved- they always get excited about that," adds Wiggins.

The class ended the field trip to The Main Dish by preparing their very own lunches in the kitchen.
