Hiring for the Holidays

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Holiday season often means an up tick in the economy, and after a 12-year high in holiday hiring in 2012 local retailers are preparing for what they hope will be another big year.

With the decorations already on store shelves, holiday season is approaching. for retailers -- this means preparing for the most important quarter of the year.

"The last quarter of the year is the busiest selling season of the year so most of them have a history to go on and they start as early as October hiring for the holiday season they have a sales trend to base it on, we don't see any reason why this year should be any different than last year or even better." Said Mitch Daniels.

Local shop owners hope hiring extra help will translate into another good year.

"There's a few local shops here and you know people do hire on extra help for the holidays and it's a good feeling coming into the fourth quarter of the year for businesses and I think it'll be okay." Said Bryan Bordelon.

For employers, the holiday season gives them an opportunity to find employees to fill full time positions when the holidays are over. If someone performs well during the holidays, they have a better chance of staying with the team.

"Yes, we're hiring them for a seasonal but we're also looking at, hey do you want to look full time, my goal is to convert as many people as we can because it's a great place to work, we love people working at Target and Target team members enjoy working for us." Said John Henderson.

Whether they plan on hiring one employee or forty, retailers say their outlook for the season is bright.

"We know everybody loves the holidays, everybody loves Christmas, people like to spend money so it's going to be a lot of business for everybody this year." Suhkdeep Kaur.

Mall managers say some local retailers see 40 to 60 percent of their sales for the year during the holiday season.
