ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- The students of Saint James Episcopal Day School celebrated a patron saint today- and their pets got in on the action. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton takes us to The Blessing of the Pets.
There were cats, dogs, and even a bunny outside of Saint James Episcopal Day School on Thursday morning and it was all part of a special celebration.
"Today we're having the blessing of the pets. It's part of St. Frances Assisi Day," says school director Anna Elise Eaglin.
The event celebrates the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the saint who loved animals.
"Over the years he began to be known as the patron saint of animals. So on this occasion here at the day school we observe that by blessing the animals that the children bring," says Father Fred Tinsley.
Kids can bring their real pets...
"His name is Milo."
Or their favorite stuffed animals.
"He's really my best friend."
To be received by Father Tinsley.
"They're going to bless him with holy water."
"I get everything from thank you very much to why are you putting water on my animal?" adds Father Tinsley.
Throughout the years, he's seen a wide array of animals.
"Everything from snakes to llamas," adds Tinsley.
So as the dogs bark...
And the father blesses, the children celebrate another year of this St. James Tradition.
"It's a great time for them to be able to play with them at school and all their friends get to see their pets," adds Eaglin.
