Cleco prepares for Tropical Storm Karen

PINEVILLE, LA. (KALB News Channel 5) – Cleco activates storm plan in preparation for Tropical Storm Karen.

On October 4, Cleco said it was closely monitoring Tropical Storm Karen and had its crews and contract crews on standby with plans to mobilize Saturday morning to St. Tammany and Washington parishes. According to Cleco, crews will be available to help with storm restoration if needed.

"We feel we are prepared for whatever this storm may bring," said Anthony Bunting, vice president of transmission and distribution operations. "We have activated our storm plan, and our storm teams are currently planning for a possible restoration effort for our customers located in the Northshore area, which is north of Lake Pontchartrain."

Forecasters predict winds could reach a maximum of 39 miles per hour with sustained winds at 25 to 35 miles per hour in the Northshore. According to Cleco, winds at this level have potential to create power outages as tree limbs and debris could be blown into power lines.

"We ask our customers in the St. Tammany and Washington parish areas to be prepared for potential outages and be mindful that downed power lines could be energized and dangerous," said Bunting. "If you see a dangerous situation with a power line, call 911 or Cleco at 1-800-622-6537."
