Shutdown economics: Local businesses react

Posted: Updated:

LEESVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -Some businesses around Fort Polk saw less business during the last week.

With the commissary closed many residents in and around Fort Polk had to shop area grocery stores. Residents and employees told us what it was like when so many civilian workers weren't working.

"We all just pulled together and made it through. We were swamped, we sold stuff we don't normally sell out of we sold out of. We were extremely busy but we just all pulled together and made it through," said Shay Ihle of Market Basket.

"Thursday, Friday, Saturday, there was a huge decline. A huge difference between the prior weekend days than what there was today. It was just was kind of disappointing for a weekend," said Jessica Kelley of Duffy's Brick Oven Pizza.

Local restaurants hope that customers will return now that the Fort Polk civilian employees are back at work while local groceries hope to retain the new customers
