Komen Cenla Race for the Cure: Coping with Cancer

Posted: Updated:

BALL, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Komen Cenla Race for the Cure is just a week and a half away. Here's one woman with breast cancer who isn't giving up – and says you shouldn't either.

"When I got the news, the doctor was like, you're just too young, you're just too young," Brandie Moyer says. "And I thought, well, it happens."

That was the moment Brandie Moyer found out she had breast cancer.

"I was kind of dumfounded, shocked," Moyer says."

"It was like a bombshell," says her husband Joseph.

Since that day more than three years ago, Moyer has undergone radiation and chemotherapy, and she's found out, her cancer is stage four. So how does she get through it, everyday?

"Honestly... I have faith" she says. "That I'm going to get through it. That's part of it. And then I have three kids. I have a 15 year old, a 13 year old, and a 4 year old. And I sit and I see those, and that's what keeps me going. Watching them grow up is what keeps me pushing forward. There are days I want to give up. There are days I want to have my pity party, throw things, whatever. But then I stop and think, they need me."

Brandie's husband, Joseph Moyer, says this ongoing journey has been about staying positive.

"Just keep her up," he says. "Keep her spirits up. Don't let her go down."

And the laughter. Brandie says, don't ever forget to laugh.

"I'm thankful I've got all them to push me," says Brandie Moyer. "I used to worry about things a day ahead, and now I try to live in the moment."

Brandie Moyer says she likely won't be feeling well enough to run the Komen Cenla Race for the Cure herself, but she has two friends participating in her honor.
