ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - After months of planning the centerpiece for the Alexandria Holocaust Memorial is at its final destination.

With a final blessing, the black granite stones that will make up the Alexandria Holocaust Memorial arrived from Minnesota.

"It's such a thrilling because we've talked about it, we've seen it on paper, we've talked about it in conversations but when you touch the granite it's just a marvelous moment to say it's real and to stop and think what this will be a message for our community and the world," says Lee Weems.

The memorial is a collaboration between the city and those who sought to educate the community about the Holocaust.

"We're helping with project coordination but all the money going into this is private money the city owns the property now, the property has been donated to us so it's a true community effort," says Darren Green.

When it's completed, the obelisk will stand 18 feet tall. The number 18 is significant because the first and eighth letters of the Hebrew alphabet spell the word meaning "life."

"Celebrating life and a reminder of the very sad things that had taken place in Europe which has brought this expression of life here to Alexandria," says Rabbi Arnold Task.

An expression of life and a reminder of the importance of history.

A dedication ceremony is set for November 10th.

To donate to the memorial make checks payable to the Alexandria Memorial Fund and mail it to Central Louisiana Community Foundation, P.O. Box 66, Alexandria, LA 71309.

Or call 318-445-7702.
