National Fire Prevention Week

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Colder weather means a higher danger for fires in the home.

It's National Fire Prevention Week

At Rosenthal Elementary, pre-K through second grade students are learning how to stay safe.

"We go around and we do public education in schools, and we do inspections as well as investigations," said fireman Sam Allen.

This year's theme is preventing kitchen fires.  Firefighters say more house fires are started in the kitchen than any other part of the house.

"Turn your pot handles in to keep your kids from walking by, knocking something off. Keep the kids out of the kitchen, don't let them play in there. It's not a good place to play," said fireman Thomas Force.

With colder weather approaching, Fire Prevention Week is a reminder of the importance of a family plan.

"I think the most important thing parents can do is talk to their children and educate their children at home as well. Talk about fire safety, come up with an escape plan what the children are to do if there should be an emergency," said Christine Evers.

For the kids it's as much fun as it is educational.

National Fire Prevention Week falls on the week of October 9th, the day the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 started. Legend has it a cow kicked over a lamp and set a fire that destroyed much of the city.
