Senior day at the fair

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - At the Fair the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office is showing Cenla seniors a fun time.

The carnival rides and booth games may be for a younger crowd, but it didn't stop Cenla seniors.

"It's wonderful, you get to see all these people, younger than me and older than me," said fairgoer Mary Ryan.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office hosted the annual Senior Citizens Day at the fair.

"It's just something to say thank you to the senior citizens of Rapides Parish. They look forward to it and you can tell. Some of these people were here at 7:30, waiting for the Coliseum to open so they could get in," said Sheriff William Hilton.

The event gives seniors a chance to get out and have a good time as well as add to their gardens.

"The nurseries in the surrounding areas donate all these plants, and they get to take home a plant or more than one plant or several plants," said Gwen Rivet.

For seniors, the day is as much about plants and food as it is about fun and fellowship.

"I met quite a few people that I know and quite a few that I don't know, and just to see so many out here having a wonderful time is what I really enjoy," said fairgoer Martha Brown.

With the Rapides Coliseum undergoing renovations in 2014, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office says the next Senior Citizens Day at the fair will take place either at the Riverfront Center in Downtown Alexandria or at the Megashelter near LSUA.
