State Police Sergeant dies after collapsing on duty

HOUMA, LA. (KALB News Channel 5) - Sudden death of Louisiana State Police Sergeant under investigation.

According to Louisiana State Police, on October 11, a State Police supervisor collapsed unexpectedly while on duty in Houma. The supervisor, Sgt. Brett Lange, was accompanied by fellow troopers who called 911 and attempted to revive him.  First responders arrived on the scene and continued attempts to revive Sgt. Lange. He was then transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. According to Police, the cause of death is still under investigation.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce the unexpected passing of Sgt. Brett Lange. His passing should be a reminder to all of us of how precious life is. Each day is a gift and what we choose to do with that gift becomes our legacy," said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. "Sgt. Lange was a respected Trooper, but more importantly, a proud husband and father.  Please keep Sgt. Lange, his family and the entire Department of Public Safety in your thoughts and prayers."  

According to Police, Sgt. Lange was 48 and a 23 year veteran of the Louisiana State Police. He served as a supervisor with the State Police Bureau of Investigation in the Houma Field Office.  He had an additional five years of prior law enforcement experience with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office and the Franklin Police Department. Sgt. Lange is survived by his wife and two sons.
