Female firefighter in Alexandria

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Lacy Lejeune is the first female firefighter to join the Alexandria Fire Department within the last decade.

"It has always been a dream to be able to be apart of something that statistically I shouldn't. I want everybody around me, you know I want all the guys to feel comfortable and I don't want them to feel like they have to be somebody that they are not, because I am not going to be somebody that I am not," said Lacy Lejeune.

While Ms. Lejeune may be the first female firefighter to recently serve the Alexandria community, fire department Chief Bernard Wesley says she is the right woman for the job.

"The fire department is not a mans world, it is male dominated. But there are women on the fire department all over the world. You know so, qualifications for the fire department do not say you have to be a male. It does take a special person to be a firefighter and Lacy is that special person," said Chief Bernard Wesley.

After her first week at the station, Lacy Lejeune says she is prepared to serve and protect the people of Alexandria.

"It was definitely something that I had to prepare for, just like anything. I mean you go into a fire and you have a 200 pound person that has to be rescued and you have to be able to rescue them. Today I am prepared for that," said Lacy Lejeune.
