ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – Hospitals across the state are challenging their employees to lose weight to help fight obesity and improve wellness.

It was weigh in day at Rapides Regional Medical Center.

The program is called Geaux Lite. It's a six month challenge with a state-wide goal for hospital employees to shed 200 tons. That's 400,000 pounds.

Teams will compete to see which hospital can lose the most weight but the real objective is to promote a healthier healthcare staff.

"Everyone is interested in improving their health.  We don't get to a bad place in our health overnight so we're not going to have an overnight recovery but every day we want to improve our health and our wellness," said Ann Vanderlick, a Rapides Regional employee.

Christus Saint Frances Cabrini Hospital is also competing in the challenge. Their weigh-in is scheduled for October 30th.
