Flu season forecast

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- October may bring cooler weather, but it's often not the only thing. Flu season is upon us, and experts say now is the time to vaccinate. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has your flu season forecast.

Are you feeling under the weather?

"People can catch this virus by A being coughed on or B maybe by touching thing that people with the flu has touched," says Timothy Turnage of Cenla Urgent Care.

With the season right around the corner, experts are trying to predict this season's flu forecast.

"We really start seeing a lot of flu in October, November, but January through March is typically the flu season. However, the past few years it's almost been like two flu seasons,"adds Turnage.

That's why now is the time to get vaccinated.

"It takes two weeks after you get the shot for your body to produce the antibodies it needs to fight off the flu," says Turnage.

Before it's too late.

"They can actually be contagious before they receive the symptoms. You can infect someone else not knowing that you have it because it can actually be dormant for a day or two," says Clinical Assistant Gloria Waldrop.

Flu shots are especially important for certain groups.

"Elderly. Anyone that has decreased immune system. Certain disorders that they have they should get the flu shot," says LPN Caroline Constance.

Flu is in the forecast for the months ahead, but you can beat the odds by getting vaccinated.

"The one most important thing that you can do is to get vaccinated and to make sure that your family is."

Cenla Urgent Care offers flu shots for twenty dollars. They say you'll be in and out in just a couple of minutes.
