School Rankings Released

Posted: Updated:

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Louisiana Department of Education released their school rankings for all of Louisiana.

Grades for schools throughout Louisiana were released, and with them a new system of scoring those schools.

"Everything changed last year, a new scale and we are looking at students scoring proficient only, that's basic mastery and advanced plus super bonus points, everything has changed this year," said Deidra Anderson.

Deidra Anderson is the principal at Alma Redwine Elementary, which is one of the schools in Central Louisiana that improved over the 2012-2013 school year.

Anderson's school joins others in Rapides Parish that moved from an 'F' to a 'D'.

"We're delighted, we have five schools that were moved out of that 'F' status," said Tony Authement.

Rapides Parish Superintendent Authement says the upward trend is encouraging, but there is work to be done.

"We'll try and identify of course the specific areas of deficiency in terms of student performance and we are going to key in on those as we provide support for those schools," said Authement.

For Rapides Parish High Schools some grades were lowered. Alexandria Senior High dropped from an 'A' to a 'C' and Pineville High went from an 'A' to 'B'. Superintendent Authement says the falling scores may be a result of the new scoring system.

"Every one of our high schools with the exception of one based on our review of the data that we got this morning actually improved their rate of growth, but with the new grading scale it did in fact drop their grade by a letter grade," said Authement.

For Alma Redwine Elementary, a new year means another opportunity for improvement.

"We go for the gold, not only academically but socially and morally, so yes I do see improvement in behavior, morale esteem, everything has really improved, we are going for the gold and moving forward at Redwine," said Anderson.
