RPSO: Student at Aiken Virtual School brings gun to school

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Students at Aiken Virtual School are urged to speak up if they see something suspicious at their school.

"If they have some information I would hope that they would go and share it with the administration or the S-R-O. We want to be preventative and the only way we can prevent is if they bring something to us that we can be aware of and to look for," said Deputy Superintendent Clyde Washington.

"They can help by sharing that information with someone that they have confidence with a counselor or teacher or the principle or the school resource officer and that would help us tremendously in keeping our school safe," said Captain Travis Davidson of the RPSO.

It was a student speaking up that led to another student being arrested for bringing a stolen handgun to campus. A student who brought ammunition to the campus was questioned and released.

"We were informed by students there that the kid possibly brought a gun so the resource officer along with the help of the juvenile investigator were able to find a weapon based on the information given by one of the students," said Davidson.

The school was already on lock down due to gunfire outside the campus the previous day.

"There was some gunshots previously on the Wednesday in the neighborhood so the school went into lockdown mode and then secured the building. The next day administration and SRO were on alert, just being observant, and they observed some suspicious behavior. They saw a kid going into an area with bushes picking up something and they kind of went and addressed that issue," said Washington.

The juvenile was charged with illegal possession of a stolen handgun and placed in the Renaissance Detention Center.
