Drive-thru flu shots

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Many residents in Cenla visited the drive-through today, but not for a hamburger.

The Department of Health and Hospitals held its annual Flu Shot Drive Through at no cost to those with medical coverage. Those without coverage were charged ten dollars. More than 600 people showed up last year and those involved hoped to see even more residents this time around. Volunteers consisted of registered nurses and nursing students from LSUA.

"This is an excellent exercise for the nurses because they get some clinical experience and it also teaches them about disaster preparedness, because if there were a flu epidemic then we would all have to be getting our flu shots . We would all be getting them in a situation like this one," said Dr. David Holcombe.

Department of Health and Hospitals officials urge everyone six months and older to get a flu shot.
