ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – A trustee has been accused of trying to smuggle drugs into jail.

Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office said that on Oct. 21, deputies with the Corrections Security Section received information that a trustee working in the community was attempting to smuggle contraband into Rapides Parish Detention Center 3 in Alexandria.  A search was conducted on all the inmates working outside the facility.   Shane Crain, 38, of Alexandria, was one of the inmates searched. He admitted to concealing contraband in a body cavity.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where two separate bags of marijuana and tabacco were removed.  Crain is charged with possession of CDS I with intent to distribute and introduction of contraband in a correctional facility.

Sheriff William Hilton of Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies work hard to keep contraband out of jail.

"Most of our trustee's do an excellent job working in the community to help pay their debt to society.  Some continue to break the law.  Our deputies are vigilant in their efforts to prevent contraband from getting in our jails" said Sheriff William Earl Hilton.

Crain's trustee status has been revoked.  The investigation is ongoing.
