Groundskeeper Coaches

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB NEWS Channel 5) - During game day you expect to see a high school football coach at practice or calling plays, but what about doing laundry or mowing the football field grass?

It's game day at Pineville High School.

Like any football team, preparations begin days in advance.

"Normally two or three hours to paint the field, then you have preparations for pre-game meals, preparations for post-game meals on the road. It's a lot of other things before and after the game that goes into it as well," said Head Coach Robbie Martin.

Dan Christman calls offensive plays for the Pineville Rebels but that's not his only job.

For the last 25 years he's also been the school's Field Manager.

"I take care of the practice field and the game field, keep it cut, groomed, swept that type of stuff so it's pretty much a year round job for me," said Christman.

It takes a lot to prepare for a game, but for the players and the coaches nothing is more important than pride. Pride that starts and ends on the field.

"The home people take pride in our facilities, we tried to improve our facilities this summer and we have more improvements coming," said Martin.

"It's important that we do our part, and not just here, but in every aspect of the school, it's important," said Christman.

A reflection of a love for the sport and the influence coaches have on their players.

"It's what we really do, it's what we're here for, try to develop them, not just as athletes, but as young men, for society later on," said Christman.
