S.N.A.P. Cuts in Cenla

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Cuts in the S.N.A.P. food stamp program have gone into effect.

"During the federal stimulus program, the S.N.A.P. benefits were increased overall. During that time when food cost was so high and you know the economy really was so bad. It's a reduction and it feels like a cut but it's returning to back to normal levels of food stamp funding," said Jayne Wright-Velez of the Central Louisiana Food Bank.

Local residents on food assistance will need to change their food budget.

"We know that with the cuts to food stamps that will just make a greater impact for their family and their monthly budget," said Linda Hutson of the food bank.

The food bank and the Manna House expect a little surge, especially near the end of the month.

"I predict that we will have increased traffic. We haven't seen it yet but the first part of the month-the benefit cards are loaded at the first of the month, so they will run out sooner than they did before. So instead of the last three or four days it may be the last five or six or seven days," explained John McLure of the Manna House"

"So we expect that we will see more people coming to us in November December. While we certainly can't fill the gap for every family that's receiving snap benefits, we take whatever donations we have been trying to stretch them as far as they will go," said Wright-Velez.

Volunteers at the Manna House and the food bank encourage Cenla residents to help as well.

"One thing we want people to consider, about making financial gifts, food donations or even volunteering their time because every little bit does make a difference," said Hutson.
