The Guitar Project

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- Guitars aren't just for strumming anymore thanks to a fundraiser being put on here in Cenla. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has the details on The Guitar Project.

There's about twenty of them and they've each got a personality of their own.

"They've been transformed into sometimes still recognizable guitars but in some cases they've been completely cut up and deformed and transformed into something else," says Alyssa Fridgen, of the Alexandria Museum of Art.

These guitars will be up for auction Friday evening at The Guitar Project event, an idea that all started with Spirits Food and Friends.

"We were trying to create a way to combine the community of art and music together to raise money for the museum and to raise awareness for local non-profits," says Lee Gwinn of Spirits.

Each guitar was transformed into a masterpiece by artists from around Cenla.

"I've painted other things. Pieces of furniture and other non-traditional surfaces but never a guitar," says artist Jason Gray.

The instruments come in all colors, patterns, and shapes, and some even light up!

"Each character is sort of outlined with these holes so each character sort of lights up and it shoots lights out the side as well," says artist Cindy Blair.

The sale of each guitar will benefit a local charity of each artist's choice.

"My charity is actually the Hope House and this is actually from the song Blackbird by Paul McCartney. He wrote the song in the early 60's and it represents civil rights," says artist Anne Reid.

So if you're looking for a conversation starter for the living room wall, you're sure to find one at this event.

The Guitar Project event is Friday evening from 7 to 10 at the Alexandria Museum of Art. It will feature live music, food, and of course the guitars will be up for auction. Tickets are $25 and reservations are required. For make reservations contact Spirits Food & Friends at 445-4491 or email
