Veterans Day at Fort Polk

FORT POLK, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - A moving ceremony at Fort Polk honored the men and women of our Armed Forces that served and are serving in the military.

Cecil R. Walker is a poet.

"I just wrote all different kinds of poems, I can do two lines, three lines, four lines, whatever it don't matter, all I need some times is a persons name to write a poem," said Walker.

His poetry is special because Cecil is a veteran, and a ceremony at Fort Polk was dedicated to him and others who served.

"We want to remember and certainly acknowledge and celebrate, and of course many veterans who've gone on before us, so we're here today to recognize them and acknowledge them," said Rep. John Fleming.

It's a ceremony dedicated to their steadfast defense of freedom.

"From the very beginning of our country from the Revolutionary War to today, so it's an upbeat ceremony for me we should be thankful for what they have accomplished and the many sacrifices they have given and continue to thank them for what they've done," said Brigadier General William Hickman.

A chance for Cecil to show his own appreciation for his brothers and sisters in arms.

"Like I stated in most of my poems, I love my Veteran friends, I like to be with them once in a  while when I can and support them when I can," said Walker.

Walker says he left the service in February of 1946 but he has been a poet since he was a child.
