Alexandria Teen Killed in Natchitoches Parish Crash

NATCHITOCHES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - According to Louisiana State Police, a Friday Night crash involving three vehicles killed a teenager from Alexandria, LA and injured several others.

Troopers responded to the crash around 7:20 p.m., which occurred on I-49 near the Flora Exit.  The crash involved a 2008 Ford pickup, driven by James D. Adkins Jr. (W/M 31 yrs) of Carthage, TX, a 2000 Cadillac Escalade, which was not occupied, and a 2012 Toyota Yaris, which was not occupied. The Cadillac and the Toyota were stopped in the left northbound lane of I-49 and the emergency flashers were activated on both vehicles.  The occupants, now considered pedestrians, of the Cadillac and the Toyota were outside their vehicles assessing the damage to the Toyota, which had just collided with a deer.  The Ford failed to yield to the other vehicles and collided with the Cadillac.  This collision caused the Cadillac to collide with the Toyota. 

 

During the course of these events, a pedestrian identified as Shakira Miles (B/F 16 yrs), was struck by one of the vehicles.  She was transported to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead.  Several other pedestrians were injured during the crash.  They are identified as Beverly Howard (B/F 64 yrs) of Lafayette, LA, Tremayne D. Howard (B/M 23 yrs) of Lafayette, and another juvenile (B/F 16 yrs) of Alexandria.  These three individuals received minor/moderate injuries and were transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center.

 

Matthew Simmons (pedestrian – W/M 33 yrs) of Lindale, TX was not injured.

 

Adkins Jr. was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries.  He was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center.

 

Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending.  The crash remains under investigation.
