Leesville celebrates Veterans Day

Posted: Updated:

LEESVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Veterans Day is a meaningful day for all of America. In military communities like Leesville, it is especially significant.

"Veterans Day here for the town of Leesville is very significant. We focus on our community and we really embrace our veterans here in our parish in our town--hometown. So it's something we want to do and remember," said Mike Long, former president of the Vietnam Combat Veterans.

It's an opportunity to honor those who gave their lives to serve and protect our nation.

"Memorialize those individuals that have fallen to give us the freedoms that we need and we deserve here the United States, as well as an attempt to recognize those that are still serving to keep us free," said Rick Bulcak, commander of VFW 3106.

Those participating say the event helps bring the community closer together.

"Number one, unifies the city, number two, honors our veterans, number three I think it makes a connection with Fort Polk--our soldiers at Fort Polk and the community of Leesville so I think those three are the connection and the significance for the City of Leesville," said Army Chaplain Jesus Perez.
