Alexandria Holocaust Memorial Dedication

ALEXANDRIA (KALB News Channel 5) - A special dedication ceremony in Downtown Alexandria for a project that's been years in the making.

As the bells sound, heads bow remember those lost.

"We here in Alexandria, Louisiana, add our voices to all those around the world who have affirmed, we will not forget, said Rabbi Arnold Task, Chairman of the Alexandria Holocaust Memorial Committee.

It's the culmination of years of planning and collaboration between many faiths, along with Celia business and community leaders.

The Alexandria Holocaust Memorial was dedicated on a symbolic anniversary.

"November 10th, marks the 75th anniversary of Reinstall, the night of shattered glass, in 1938 when Jewish homes, synagogues and jewish owned stores in germany and austria were ransacked," said Rabbi Task.

An 18-foot tall monument to provide hope in the face of evil.

"There's hope, there's hope in a world of darkness, that's why we used the black granite, to represent darkness, but as you can see the sun is shining beautifully on the monument today and for that we have hope," said Darren Green with the City of Alexandria.

"There's a shininess to it, which is reflection and for me that means there's hope when we reflect back on the world's indifference," Green said.

A promise set in stone.

"To make sure that the community, which in each one of us lives, remembers, and make sure that nothing of the holocaust will be forgotten," said guy Cohen of the Israeli Consulate.

Six candles to honor the six million lost to hatred.

"We will remember them, we will remember them"

And a community standing together to pledge, never again.

"The diversity that was so absolutely present, it was something that you could feel, a sense of togetherness, we're in this together," said Rabbi Task.

The Alexandria Holocaust Memorial is located at the intersection of 4th and Elliott streets, near Rapides Regional Medical Center.
It was constructed entirely through donations from private individuals, corporations, and institutions and is maintained by the City of Alexandria. The Alexandria Holocaust Memorial Board conducts educational activities that are also funded by donations.

No admission fee is charged for the memorial, but if you would like to help with the ongoing effort to provide Holocaust education, please send your contributions to:
