Teen Killed in Rapides Parish Crash


RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- A single vehicle crashed killed a teenager from Alexandria, early Monday morning.

State Police say the teen was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected during the crash.

Troopers responded to the crash around 12:55 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 496 east of LA Hwy 3054. 

State Police say the crash involved a 2008 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 16-year-old Chase L. Michiels. Investigators say the Chevrolet was eastbound on LA Hwy 496 when Michiels lost control and exited the right side of the roadway.  After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with several small trees and overturned.

Michiels was pronounced dead.  Troopers say his only passenger, a 17-year-old boy from Alexandria, was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries.  He was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. 

The crash remains under investigation.

Chase Michiels was a student at Holy Savior Menard High School.

"Our school is deeply saddened by this loss," said Menard principal Joel Desselle.  "We are praying for his family during this very difficult time and working to help our students get through such a devastating loss to in our Menard family."

Chase was a junior at Menard High School.  He was an active member of the Eagles Basketball team and the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Youth Group. 

Menard will host a memorial mass in Chase's honor.  The mass will be held at 8 am, November 12, 2013 at Holy Savior Menard.  The school will also have grief counselors available for students following the mass.
