Victims of Lee Street riot remembered

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - This Veterans Day also memorializes our military right here in downtown Alexandria.

Soldiers who died during the Lee Street riot were remembered today, at the place of their passing. Lee Street at a time was one of the busiest streets in the city and was the hotspot for bars and nightclubs. One dark night however things went out of control which required the intrusion of local and military police. Some soldiers did not survive the event.

"These veterans, these soldiers that was killed, they called it a riot, that they be not forgotten. Alexandria won't forget them, America will not forget them, and that's my main purpose I don't want them ever forgotten," said Etta Compton.

The riot was during World War Two on January 10, 1942.
