Cenla Teens Remembered

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- It was a sad return for students and staff at two Cenla schools today as they gathered in memory of two students that lost their lives in car accidents over the weekend. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton attended the memorials for both students, and she has the story.

Students in Rapides Parish returned to school on Tuesday after a holiday weekend, but instead of feeling refreshed from the extra day off students returned full of grief.

"It's been a very somber atmosphere. Very quiet. Everybody's in mourning. Everybody's trying to deal with this tragedy," says Holy Savior Menard High principal Joel Desselle.

Shakira Miles of Alexandria Senior High and Chase Michiels of Holy Savior Menard High were killed in separate car accidents over the weekend.

Tuesday was another day of grieving for both families.

"She's resting in the arms of her father. She's fine. She our angel watching over us. Yes we're going to have some hard times but we're going to have some good days as well. Some will be better than others," says Christy Brevelle, the mother of Shakira Miles.

As well as the students at both Cenla schools. Memorials were held at each school for both Miles and Michiels.

Teachers and staff have begun the long process of helping the students cope with this tragedy.

"A number of people available just to express their grief and ask questions," says Blake Deshautetoe, Menard's chaplain.

A tragedy that took the lives of two Cenla teens, all too soon.

"It's hard to understand why things like this happen. You have to leave it in God's hands," adds Desselle.
