Young Achiever's Spotlight

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- There's an athlete here in Cenla who's using his skills to benefit a great cause, with a personal connection. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton introduces us to a football player who's kicking away cancer.

Jonathan Tatum is the kicker for the Menard Eagles football team, but that hasn't always been the case.

"They had asked me to play because I had always- I was always pretty good at soccer and they asked me to play and I ended up being pretty good at it," says Tatum.

It's an important position that comes with a lot of pressure.

"That's when I do the best. I just go in and just do it and not think about it too much because when I think about it I miss."

But this season Jonathan is using his position as kicker to do more than just score points. He's participating in a national program called "Kickers Kicking for Cancer."

"It's for cancer and I mean it's had such a big impact on my family and my mom thought it was such a great idea so I ended up doing it."

He was inspired by his own father to participate in the program, who passed away from pancreatic cancer.

"He'd probably be flattered. There's not a day that I don't think about him, you know."

Jonathan has been collecting donations all season for the Cure Childhood Cancer Organization. He's already exceeded his initial goal, but he hopes to raise even more.

"I started off the season with $500. That was my goal but I exceeded that probably the third week of the season and I'm at about $1500 right now. I'm hoping right now since we have one regular season game left. I'm hoping to get to at least $2,000."

He's a young achiever who's kicking field goals for a winning cause.

"I love kicking and it's a great cause, doing both at the same time."
