Subtropical Storm Melissa developed earlier today over the open central Atlantic. Melissa is located about 650 miles ESE of Bermuda. Movement is toward the NW at 9 mph. The maximum sustained wind is near 60 mph.

Melissa is expected to strengthen and transition to a tropical cyclone Tuesday. It is possible Melissa could become a hurricane by Tuesday evening. A turn toward the north is expected Tuesday morning followed by a northeasterly motion by Tuesday night. Melissa is not expected to directly influence the U.S.

Elsewhere, tropical cyclone development is not expected this week.
