Plainview child found wandering highway

GLENMORA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Four-year-old Trace Burnett was ordered to return to class from PE at Plainview High School due to misbehaving, but Trace ended up trying to walk home.

"I said, "Well why were you coming home?" and he said "Well I thought I was in trouble," you know?  We sat down and we talked and we told him that, you know, don't leave the school. If he needs us to go to the office and call, said Trace's father," Terry Burnett.

Trace found his way down Highway 112, about three quarters of a mile near an orange spot in the road.

"And it was a lady from Oakdale who came through and saw him and knew that something wasn't right, and she stopped and picked him up and brought him back to the school and the school had no idea," said Burnett.

Trace's parents claim he had no escort to class. The principal of Plainview didn't return our calls but the Rapides Parish superintendent said the school board is aware of what happened.

"It is a personnel issue of course, those issues are highly confidential and so we can't say a bunch at this point but is definitely under investigation," said Superintendent Authement.

Trace's parents are grateful that their child was returned safely, however they hope that this never happens to another family.

"What's done with our child is over, said with. We're just thankful that he's home and that he's safe. What we want to see now is the protective measures that are going to be put in place to prevent this from happening again," expressed Burnett.
