New urgent care clinics to replace Huey P. Long

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - In the next few months Rapides Regional Medical Center plans to open two new urgent care clinics and keep the Huey P. Long name.

By the end of the year, operations at Huey P. Long Medical Center will have a different look.

With three clinics, two in Alexandria and one in Pineville, the next chapter in the history of the Huey P. Long Medical Center is being written.

"The state has approached the hospital to look at providing the services here and we were very excited to have that opportunity to make an impact in Central Louisiana," said Patricia Shehane.

Operations of the state-run charity hospital are now in the hands of Rapides Regional Medical Center and Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. On December 2nd, they will open the doors to two new clinics in Alexandria.

A third operated by Rapides Regional will open at the Huey P. Long site in January.
"Many decades of wonderful service to the population is transitioning to the private sector through a partnership between Christus Cabrini and Rapides, we are the providers of services going forward," said Jeff Tarrant.
However some who use the Medical Center are worried how this will affect their care.

"I don't know if the care is going to continue over or we're going to get better care, how they're doing it but personally, I like the care that I've received over the last 20-something years and I've enjoyed coming here and would have preferred coming here before any of the other hospitals," said Mary Boswell.

Both Rapides Regional and Christus Cabrini say the new clinics will fill that need, and no one should fall through the cracks.

"They'll be able to use our services here, in-patient and out-patient, we will have the same urgent care policies and anyone who does not have the insurance will have the paperwork that they'll complete, and it will follow a very similar process to what they've been experiencing at Huey P. Long," said Shehane.

The emergency room at Huey P. Long Medical Center will remain open in it's current capacity until June of 2014
