Small Business Saturday

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - It's not just major retailers cashing in on Black Friday. Small businesses have opened their doors as well.

Preparations are underway for a busy shopping day that's designed with local businesses in mind.

On one of the busiest shopping days of the year, local retailers are cashing in on the Black Friday excitement.

"We have a lot of fun, the holidays are a great time of year, everybody is happy and cheerful, so it's really fun to wrap a pretty present and see the customer's face," said Jennifer Tichenor.

For many locally owned businesses, like Terra Home in Alexandria, Black Friday is a chance to show customers a different side of sales.

"Small businesses are really the bones of our community, a lot of the money that you spend here locally stays here locally, and with that being said, a lot of what we have to offer is unique," said Tichenor.

It isn't just the unique gifts that draw customers to locally owned shops, sometimes it's a way to help a friend.

"You come in and people get to know us by name, not just us getting to know you by name, and it's kind of that, you feel at home and it's really important and people get surprised you come in and you're like oh you remember me, and we're like, yeah I do," said Jessica Alwell.

Which comes as a special experience for Black Friday shoppers.

"I like it if you can go in and get that personal touch, in a place like this, they'll wrap your presents which I love and they do a great job, a better job than I can do, so I enjoy that, it's a nice feeling," said Samantha Carson.

It also means big sales at an important time of year for the local economy.

"We've got a great staff here who's willing to do whatever we need to do, we gift wrap for free, you get a more personal shopping experience, in locally owned stores," said Tichenor.
