Natchitoches man arrested for night hunting, narcotics offenses

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office arrest Kurt P. Merritt for night hunting, among other charges.

According to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office, NPSO Deputies and La. Wildlife-Fisheries Enforcement Agents have arrested a Natchitoches man on hunting violations and felony drug charges.

According to NPSO, on December 1, at approximately 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a vehicle illegally night hunting from the roadway, on La. Hwy 478 between La. Hwy 1 and Interstate-49.

NPSO said deputies were provided with a description of the vehicle, and while they were responding, deputies observed and stopped the 2012 Jeep on La. Hwy 478. Deputies said when the driver of the vehicle exited, he had a spotlight attached to his cap. The Driver realized it, and he immediately removed the spotlight, throwing it into the vehicle. Deputies said after observing the spotlight and weapons in plain view in the vehicle, the violator was placed under arrest for night hunting violations.

NPSO said La. Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Enforcement Agents also responded to the scene to assist deputies. NPSO said during a search incidental to the arrest, deputies seized suspected methamphetamine on the suspects' person. Deputies and Wildlife Agents also seized a Ruger .357 caliber pistol,  H&K .22 caliber pistol,  H&K .22 magnum rifle and a Marlin rifle.

According to NPSO, deputies arrested Kurt P. Merritt, 52 of the 100 block of Patrick Rd., Natchitoches, La. NPSO Merritt was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center and charged with one count of Hunting Deer from a Public Road, one count of Hunting Deer during Illegal Hours with an Artificial Light, one count of Hunting Deer from a Moving Vehicle, one count of Hunting Deer with an Illegal Weapon, one count of Possession of CDS Schedule II Methamphetamine and one count of Illegal Possession of Firearms during a Felony Narcotics Offense.

NPSO said Merritt remains in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center.

According to NPSO, those involved in the arrest were, Sgt. Shane LaCaze, Agent Billy Shoemaker, Lt. Brian Powell assisted by Natchitoches PD and the Natchitoches Multi-jurisdictional Drug Task Force.
