Winter weather driving safety

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Oh the weather outside is frightful here in Cenla. With cold and wet conditions, this weekend may not be the easiest for drivers.

When it comes to winter weather in Cenla, some may need to be brought back up to speed. Number one: Maintain your vehicle.

"Some of your maintenance issues that you need to take care of are take care and make sure that your tires are in good shape and has plenty of tread on it and everything. Then make sure that your tire pressure is normal and all. Either inspect your coolant, or get your professionals take and inspect it, or make sure your cooling system is working properly and everything, and it's got plenty of antifreeze in it. Belts hoses and all that there. Just some simple checks to make sure everything is working properly like your heater and all that there before the time comes," said Jessie Campbell of Price Automotive.

Rainy weather and falling temperatures could mean icy roads.

"You shouldn't slam on your brakes because all you're going to do is slide a lot and that's where's speed becomes a factor. Even though the posted speed limit may be 55 just be a little careful and drive a little less than the speed limit," said Tommy Carnline of the RPSO.

Leave a little earlier for your destination. There are a lot more people on the road this time of year; and put down that cell phone.

"Distracted driving, that is one of the leading causes of accidents especially in this type of weather. Pay attention to elevated portions of the roadway. They're the first ones that will ice over if there's precipitation and then freezing temperatures. Keep an eye on your local forecast as well," said Carnline.
