Sleet or freezing rain? Not likely

Posted: Updated:

We will be cold and wet again, and even breezy until the overnight hours. Don't expect snow, and likely, sleet or freezing rain is out of the question as well. Rain chances will increase gradually through the evening and overnight. The temperatures will likely not fluctuate very much as we will stay right around the freezing mark as a blanket of clouds keeps the "heat" in.

The overall weather pattern shows that the front has passed, but I don't need to tell you that. We can tell that by stepping outside. However the jet stream is bringing warmer, moist gulf air into the upper atmosphere, so we are left with cold rain once it reaches us. Expect to stay mostly cloudy for a few days, and gradually wetter. That is expected to change in the hours ahead. The winds may make it feel as if it is more in the upper 20s, especially coming from the north. We will warm a bit over the next couple of days, but it will still be chilly.

While some of us may be just below freezing, there is an ample layer of warm air above us. While rain starts off as snow, it will melt into rain in this warm layer. Depending on how thick this warm layer is will determine whether or not the rain refreezes into ice or sleet, or is cold enough to freeze on contact. This warm layer should be fairly thick and I think we will be stuck with cold rain. Icy roads are very possible so drive carefully! Bridges are often the first to freeze!
