Western town educates and entertains

Posted: Updated:

VERDA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - You can take a step back in time just by stepping out of the car.

The town of Sabine Crossing is a well-kept secret in Grant Parish.

It's a town full of history – living history.

A group of friends got together and decided to build an Old Western town to re-enact in.

"It's a living history, actually, of the way towns were back in the day. Each building here is not a fake front. Each building here has a purpose. The café - we actually have meals in the café. The blacksmith's shop is functioning and it's period correct," said Doug James, who acts as blacksmith and preacher for Sabine Crossing.

It's a work in progress, too. Those involved go to their town and work on the buildings. There's a blacksmith's shop, jail, post office, store, and even a café.

It's all designed to represent an 1865 through 1890 Old West town.

Spending a weekend in the town doesn't only mean donning old fashioned clothes and doing a job the club members might not be used to. It means realistically living in the period – which could mean spending the night in the Sabine Crossing jail.

"People get robbed and there's shoot outs in the saloon and things of that nature. Nothing's really choreographed. A lot of it is just spur of the moment. These guys are really good actors. They put on a pretty good show."

And while it's a playground for the big kids, it's a learning experience for elementary students.

"It seems like they like it. They get to experience what the West was like. What kind of buildings they had, how they live."

If you work for a school and are interested in bringing a class to Sabine Crossing, you can contact the club via their Facebook page.
