BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A new audit says the state education department isn't properly monitoring Louisiana's voucher program to make sure students get an adequate education.

Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera's office released its first performance review of the statewide program Monday.

The audit says the Department of Education doesn't have the checks and balances in place to make sure the private schools offer an "academically acceptable" education and have the capacity to take in the number of voucher students they request.

Purpera's office also says the department should develop stricter procedures for removing poor-performing schools from the voucher program.

Gov. Bobby Jindal pushed the creation of the program. More than 6,700 students attend private schools with public tax dollars.

The education department defended its oversight of the program, saying it has rigorous accountability standards.
