Fire station grand opening on Coliseum

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The city of Alexandria held a grand opening for fire station number five on Coliseum Boulevard Monday morning.

It's a step in a plan to renovate and reposition the city's six fire stations. It's also an effort to maintain a public protection certification.  With this rating, residents are safer and local insurance premiums are reduced. The new station is able to accommodate more firefighters and equipment, and will be low maintenance.

"You can look at my face and see how happy I am. The firefighters are excited and I'm excited and if you look at the station itself can see how beautiful. If you look at the station, you can see how beautiful it is, this is the first station of this type, of this sort in Alexandria," said Chief Bernard Wesley.

The last time a new fire station was built in Alexandria was in 1982. That fire station is on Twin Bridges Road.
