Deville teenager killed in crash

LASALLE PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) One killed, two injured in early morning crash off Hwy. 28.

According to Louisiana State Police, on Dec. 20, a single vehicle crash killed a young teenager from Deville, La. and injured two others.  Police said all three were not wearing a seatbelt and were ejected during the crash.

Troopers responded to the crash around 4:15 a.m. Police said the crash occurred on Diversion Canal Levee Road off of LA Hwy. 28 and involved a 1999 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Andrew Mendez, 14.  The Chevrolet was southbound on Diversion Canal Levee Road when Mendez lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle began overturning. 

Police said Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene. Mendez's passengers, identified as Cody Ethan Reed, 21, of Deville and Denise Marie Prouty, 18, of Deville, were transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center for treatment.  Reed received serious injuries and Prouty received moderate injuries. 

Police said routine toxicology tests are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
