Very Special Birthday

Posted: Updated:

COLFAX, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Imagine being able to celebrate 100 Christmases. For a special lady in Colfax it was possible, and her family was there at her side.

Pauline Hankwitz is a very special lady. When she was 18 years old she wrote a poem for her husband.

"He'd always greet you with a smile, which makes your blood run cold, it makes you want to rush to him, and you in his arms he would hold," said Hankwitz.

82 years later. Hankwitz hasn't missed a beat.

"I still mow my grass, I still like to work outside," said Hankwitz.

On her 100th birthday friends, strangers and even the President wrote to say congratulations.

"We ended up with 271 cards, and she has loved every second of reading the cards," said Judy LaCour.

Pauline says there is no secret to a long life.

"Just live a good clean life, that's all a can tell them," said Hankwitz.

Except to remember those who are most important because age is just a number.

"I hope when my hair is old and gray and wrinkles are crossing my face, we can look back over the old old years and say, thank god, we've won the race," said Hankwitz.

In honor of her birthday, December 22nd, 2013 was declared Pauline Hankwitz day by the town of Colfax
