Former state fire marshal dies

BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – Former State Fire Marshal Carrol L. Herring passed away on December 26 at a Baton Rouge hospital.

According to the Office of the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, Herring was 86 years-old, and had been battling illness for some time.

Herring was a native of Bogalusa.

Prior to becoming the state fire marshal, Herring spent 15 years as a fireman with the Baton Rouge Fire Department and 12 years as Director of LSU Firemen Training.

In 1981, Herring was appointed to serve as State Fire Marshal by then-Governor Dave Treen.

Herring held the position for nine years until he retired in 1990.

In 1999, Herring was called to service again as Director of LSU Fire Service Training, which then operated as the LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute. Herring continued his service until his second retirement in 2005.
