It's 2014 now and the new year began on a chilly note with partly cloudy skies.
The first morning of 2014 dawned chilly with low temperatures ranging from the lower 30s to the lower 40s. Winnfield was the cold spot with a low of 31 degrees while Opelousas and Ville Platte saw their thermometers drop only to 42. The long-term daily average is 39 degrees and the record is 17 in 1964.
Peek-a-boo sunshine brought afternoon high temperatures into the upper 50s to the lower 60s. Many, Natchitoches, Colfax, AEX, Oakdale, and Bellwood all reached 63 degrees while Opelousas stayed at 58 and Simmesport at 59. The 30-year daily average is 59 and the record is 81 in 1952.
A strong cold front will sweep through central Louisiana early Thursday morning. Colder weather and gusty winds will follow the front.
