Northwestern State looks to continue streak with Lamar

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – Northwestern State to host Lamar on Jan 4.

Looking to push its win streak to four, the Northwestern State women's basketball team will host Lamar Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. or the second game of the Southland Conference opening weekend.

NSU (8-5, 1-0 SLC) defeated Sam Houston 78-59 on Thursday in the league opener. Lamar (5-7, 0-1 SLC) fell at Stephen F. Austin 64-43. Keisha Lee led the way for Northwestern State on Thursday with 21 points.  All five NSU starters scored 10 or more points. Dominique Edwards was the only Cardinal in double-figures Thursday. She had 15 points, and the next closest was JaMeisha Edwards who had nine.

This season, the Lady Demons have averaged and allowed 64 points per contest.  Both Lee (16.0 points per game) and Trudy Armstead (14.6 ppg) score in double-figures, and Janelle Perez follows just behind with nine a contest. Armstead leads Northwestern State in rebounds, 6.2 a game, just ahead of Chelsea Rogers (5.8 rpg) and Kourtney Pennywell (5.5 rpg). Edwards leads LU in scoring 17.3 points per game. Gia Ayers averages 12.9, Shauna Long 10.9, and JaMeisha Edwards nine points per game. As a team, the Cardinals score 65.8 points a contest and allow 68.9 a game.

Northwestern State dominated Sam Houston and jumped out to an early lead.  By the 8:40 mark into the game NSU held a 15-point lead, and by halftime the lead was 20. The Lady Demons opened the second half on a 14-6 run that gave NSU the largest lead of the game, 26 points. NSU outrebounded the Bearkats 36-35 and forced the Sam into 11 turnovers with four steals.

Through the season, Northwestern State has averaged 36.2 rebounds per game, and Lamar has grabbed 37.3. The Lady Demons average 13.3 turnovers per game and 6.5 steals per game.  Lamar averages 17.6 turnovers per game and 7.2 steals a game.

Northwestern State will play its next two games on the road at Texas A&M on Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. and Houston Baptist on Jan. 11 at 3 p.m.

The Lady Demon will return home on Jan. 16 to face rival Stephen F. Austin at 5:30.
