Swine flu in Cenla

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - It's flu season and the swine flu is back - especially here in the south.

Those six months and older are encouraged to get their flu shots. The department of public health reports that most deaths related to the swine flu epidemic a few years ago occurred in younger people. This year's flu shot can help protect you against the swine flu - and the vaccines are  available at local pharmacies and doctor's offices.

"The swine flu has been all over the United States but it's particularly severe here in the South. This was the same virus that was here in the 2009 and 2010 season so it's just percolated around and now it's the predominant strain located in ER's and in the hospitals," said Dr. David Holcombe.

The department of public health wants to remind all Cenla residents that it's never too late to get your flu shot.
