BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - For the past 71 years, thousands of Louisiana students who didn't finish high school have received alternative diplomas by completing a test commonly referred to as "the GED."

But starting this month the General Educational Development test will no longer be administered in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Community and Technical College System, which has administered GED tests in the past couple years, has dumped the GED in favor of the High School Equivalency Test.

Louisiana is among a large number of states dropping the old standard because of changes made by the company that offers it.

Quintin Taylor, communications director for the LCTCS, tells The News-Star (http://tnsne.ws/1gbJVOz ) the primary factor in making the switch was cost but accessibility also played a major role in the decision.
