Protect your livestock

Posted: Updated:

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - People know that if weather turns freezing, you should bring in the pets, but sometimes, they don't fit through the dog door.

Many residents in Cenla are owners of horses, cows, goats, and other livestock. With the low temperatures expected tonight, it's likely that many of these animals will be more exposed to the frigid conditions. Vets recommend keeping your animals fed and providing adequate shelter.

"Don't let them run out of food. Keep hay, fresh water, it's gonna freeze so make sure you bust the ice out of the tops of the water troughs so they can have water. Take special care of the geriatric or the older guys, provide shelter if possible. Allow access to barns or wind breaks and things like that," said Dr. Chris Thomson.

Feeding livestock in groups can help the animals take advantage of body heat as well.
