NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Woodley's 30 sparks Demons by Cardinals 99-85.

Guard Zeek Woodley became the first Northwestern State freshman in more than 30 years to score 30 points as he sank 12 of 15 shots Saturday, helping spark explosive Northwestern State by Lamar 99-85 in Southland Conference basketball.

Woodley, a 6-2 swingman who ranks among Southland leaders in four major statistical categories,  became the first freshman with a 30-point outing since at least 1981, when a fire destroyed sports record archives at NSU. He made all five of his free throws Saturday and hit one of two tries from 3-point range.

He did not score in the game's final 12:39 after converting a three-point play. The freshman had 15 points in the first half, then scored NSU's first 12 points of the second half in the opening 3:37. His previous season best was 18 points at Auburn and UTEP.

The Demons (5-8 overall, 1-1 in the Southland) never trailed, pulling away from a 31-all tie to go up 49-36 at halftime and by as much as 23 while cruising through the second half over Lamar (1-13, 0-2). The Cardinals gave up the last four points of the first half and never got closer than 10 afterward.

In one 12-second stretch, the Demons scored eight points on a 3-pointer by Brison White, a steal by Jalan West leading to Woodley's three-point play at 12:39, and a steal by White and feed to West, who was fouled and hit two free throws four seconds later.

Northwestern, which began the day second nationally in scoring (88.6 average), passed that mark with eight minutes remaining but did not score in the game's final three minutes, choosing to run the offense down to the waning seconds of the shot clock each possession.

White scored 16 while grabbing a season-best three steals, among 14 by NSU. West and DeQuan Hicks also had three steals and each scored 13 points. West distributed eight assists and had a career-best three blocks, while Hicks had seven rebounds and four assists.

Nimron Hilliard topped Lamar with a career-best 29 points, sinking 10 of 15 shots including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers, and adding eight assists.

NSU will be on the road for Southland games next Thursday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and next Saturday night at Houston Baptist. The Demons will host Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night, Jan. 16 in a matchup of the league's top two teams from last season.
